Deployable CT Scanners in service with three international Armed Forces including the UK have led to Land Systems, part of Cambridge based Marshall Aerospace and Defence Group, being awarded the Queen’s Award for Enterprise 2013 in the Innovation category, the company announces today.

The Innovation Award also includes the Company’s pioneering work designing a deployable forensic laboratory fitted into one shelter to conduct DNA and clean room forensic analysis. The facility and process started life housed in a permanent building, Land Systems then developed a three shelter system which then led to the development of the single shelter capability.

“This award demonstrates Marshall’s unrivalled expertise in developing complex deployable solutions to problems previously thought to be too difficult,” says Ray Cutting, Managing Director of Land Systems, Marshall Aerospace and Defence Group.

“In both cases we worked very closely with the customer and our partners to create a solution which is deployable over very rugged ground and gets the facility to where it is needed to provide real benefits for the forces on the ground, be they military, security or humanitarian,” he added.

The Queen’s Award for Enterprise Innovation category requires companies to demonstrate outstanding innovation and substantial improvements in performance and commercial success over the last two years. Achievement is assessed for invention, design or production, the performance of the product submitted, marketing and distribution, and after sales support.

“This award is testament to the capabilities of our engineers and project managers to work together with our customers and partners to develop solutions which can have a life changing effect. I am extremely proud of their work and congratulate them on this award which is richly deserved,” said Steve Fitz-Gerald, CEO, Marshall Aerospace and Defence Group.

The CT Scanner is a sophisticated, delicate and nowadays essential element in the clinical diagnosis path. Historically, these units have not been available to medical teams working within hostile environments. The Marshall unit can be transported by sea, rail or on the back of a truck and when it arrives it can be setup by two people and carrying out its first scan within two hours. During transportation the Philips CT Scanner is protected from shocks and vibrations using a patented system developed by Marshall’s engineers.

The deployable forensic laboratory, which can be up and running within minutes of arrival, has taken all the critical elements to enable forensic agencies to rapidly carryout DNA investigation of buccal swab, blood, hair, tissue and contact trace material to provide investigating officers and intelligence services with information to carry out their roles more quickly and whilst the scene is still “live”. Integral to the design of the unit is maintaining the internal environment to ensure that none of the collected evidence is contaminated.

An animated video of the CT Scanner being deployed is available here and video of the forerunner of the forensic shelter here.

Medical systems are at the heart of the presentation from Marshall Land Systems (www.marshall-ls.com/medical-systems), part of the Marshall Aerospace and Defence Group, during Trauma Innovation 2013 (www.traumainnovation.com) being held at the Park Plaza Hotel, London from 15 to 17 January 2013.

On stand D10 the company will be discussing how it can help partners with medical products to turn these into solutions which help to manage severe trauma at all stages of the casualty chain from the point of injury through comprehensive care at a Role 3 Field Hospital and subsequent strategic air evacuation to the home base location.

“We have a history of providing medical solutions which goes back many years to the first British Army Land Rover ambulances. We have supplied three generations of these vehicles, the most recent are still in service today on Operations,” said Ray Cutting, Managing Director of Marshall Land Systems.

“Today, our expertise includes providing fully equipped, deployable hospitals, including highly mobile CT scanners and casualty loading systems for military vehicles,” he added.

The UK’s Defence Medical Services, the Norwegian Defence Forces and NATO (through NSPA) have all chosen the Marshall Land Systems deployable CT Scanner. These fully integrated systems have a Philips Healthcare Brilliance Scanner integrated within a Marshall Matrix expandable shelter. The Marshall CT Scanner system puts vital diagnostic capability, normally available only in fixed hospital facilities, into the hands of clinicians on deployed operations. The Marshall deployable CT Scanner includes full radiation protection integrated within the unit, a protected operator area, full air conditioning and environmental control, and UPS backup equipment to preserve vital imaging data. The CT scanner can be operational and providing patient diagnostics within eight hours of arriving on site.

The Norwegian Defence Forces deployable hospital, supplied by Marshall Land Systems, is a fully integrated system which has all the facilities that are expected within a UK NHS or European standard hospital. These include surgical and dental operating units, a blood bank, laboratories, a pharmacy, central sterilisation and intensive care wards.

In addition to the company’s pedigree of providing UK MoD ambulances, Marshall Land Systems has been working with two other vehicle manufacturers to develop and provide stretcher loading systems for the Ambulance variants of the military vehicles.

Cambridge, 31 October 2012: Ten brand new vehicles in the Polar Speed Thermologistics fleet have been fitted with Thermo King refrigeration units supplied and installed by Marshall Fleet Solutions. The units are being provided with maintenance and servicing as part of the ongoing contract.

Seven Thermo King V200 multi-temperature units were fitted into Mercedes Sprinter vans and a further three V300 multi-temperature units were fitted into a new fleet specification, 5-ton Mercedes vehicles with chassis cabs and 4 metre box bodies.

The Thermo King range, supplied through Marshall Fleet Solutions, has been a successful choice for the Polar Speed fleet, selected because of the highly accurate temperature control of the units which is of critical importance to its business operation. The vehicles must operate at two highly precise positive temperatures: 5°C and 20°C in separate compartments, in order to protect the temperature-sensitive pharmaceutical products delivered all over the UK by Polar Speed. Every vehicle is fitted with calibrated onboard temperature recorders to monitor accuracy.

Director of Supply Chain at Polar Speed, Richard Holmes, states: “We selected Marshall Fleet Solutions once more because they deliver what we need, when we need it and keep our vehicles on the road, and crucially, at the temperatures we need to operate at.”

Marshall Fleet Solutions is also providing 24/7 back-up service nationally to Polar Speed via its Fleet Management system. Andrew Howells, Managing Director of Marshall Fleet solutions said: “We have worked with Polar Speed over a long period of time; we understand what they need to make their business successful, and work with them to deliver top-class solutions.”

Polar Speed offers the most comprehensive Medicine and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency approved temperate supply chain service currently available.

Marshall Land Systems to discuss camp infrastructure, medical solutions, forensics and deployable modules at Land Warfare Conference in Melbourne 29 Oct-2 Nov 2012 on stand Area 11

Melbourne, Australia and Cambridge, UK, 29th October 2012; Partnering, support, integration and supply are key to the Marshall Land Systems presentation at the Land Warfare Conference being held at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre from October 29th to November 2nd, 2012.

On the company’s stand in Area 11, Marshall Land Systems has a strong team to discuss its offerings to the market. First of these is its work in Expeditionary Camp Infrastructure which includes kitchens, latrines and other facilities necessary for a deployed camp to run efficiently. The company has developed and proven its capabilities in providing Deployable Healthcare solutions from the initial point of injury through the care chain back to a Role 3 hospital and eventual evacuation from theatre. These solutions include deployable CT Scanners, stretcher systems and fully fitted hospitals. Among the company’s customers for medical systems are the UK, Norway and France.

The experience the company has developed in providing deployable forensic laboratories has resulted in defence and security forces having a forward, re-deployable capability to exploit evidence close to the area where it was found. Rather than having to send evidence back many hundreds of kilometres for analysis, it can be investigated close to the scene of the incident and defence forces are able to act on the data much quicker.

For many years Marshall Land Systems has been developing deployable modules to be used for a wide range of roles including C4 centres, ground control stations, workshops or specialist facilities such as battery charging units.

Underlying these capabilities are the company’s proven skills in requirements capture, through life support, partnering and integration.

“Marshall Land Systems has developed a strong range of skills coupled with a very strong focus on project management to ensure our customers receive real value for money. Developing our business in Australia is a key part of the business plan and attending the Land Warfare Conference with key members of our team demonstrates our commitment. I am looking forward to continuing conversations and establishing new contacts,” said Peter Callaghan, Chief Executive of Marshall Land Systems.

Marshall Land Systems has recently established a Business Development team and appointed Iain Watt as Head of Business Development in Australia. The team is co-located with Tectonica www.tectonica.net in Melbourne. Marshall Land Systems is now launching a major supply network consultation aimed at provision of Australian based COTS solutions to Defence and other customers for a number of projects coming to fruition in Australia and potentially worldwide.

Melbourne, Australia and Cambridge, UK, 13th September 2012; Marshall Land Systems www.marshall-ls.com is putting in place the next building block on the foundation laid by six years of Marshall presence in Australia. Marshall Aerospace has been in Australia for six years working with an established contract to service the Royal Australian Air Force’s transport workhorse, the C-130H.

Marshall Land Systems has slowly been building a presence in Australia following requests to help a number of companies with responses to tenders. As part of this activity the company has identified several other projects and programs where it’s capabilities in Vehicle Completion, Trays and Modules, Shelters and Protected Workspace and Special Projects have relevance.

Marshall Land Systems’ acknowledged skills in programme management, on time delivery and through life support have won it a position as the UK MOD’s highest rated supplier in 2011. The company has embraced the importance of on time delivery and paying particular attention to responding to critical operational demands and places great emphasis on agility, speed and quality in its management and manufacturing processes. These skills make Marshall Land Systems a favourite supplier to Primes, OEMs and Defence Forces around the world and have a particular resonance in Australia.

Following the recent formation of the company’s Business Development team, the appointment of Iain Watt as Head of Business Development and its partnership and co-location with Tectonica www.tectonica.net in Melbourne, Marshall Land Systems is now launching a major supply network consultation aimed at provision of Australian based COTS solutions to Defence and other customers for a number of projects coming to fruition in Australia and potentially worldwide. This activity will more fully mature at LWC but will continue for a long time to come.

Commenting on Marshall Land Systems’ involvement in LWC Peter Callaghan the CEO of MLS said “Marshall Land Systems has slowly and surely been building its presence in Australia. We are an engineering company and follow the old adage of measure twice and cut only once. It gives you quality solutions that last and allows you to provide an agile response to problems and treat your partners with integrity. We look forward to our engagement at LWC with our future partners in the end user, customer and the supply network communities which we intend will continue for some long time. We are bringing a strong team to LWC in Melbourne as we are sure our long term investment in Australia and Australian Industry Capability is right.”

Fuel efficiency was a major factor in the latest purchase decision for Shropshire-based temperature-controlled storage and distribution specialists, Cold Move. The company has selected Thermo King SLX300 single-temperature refrigeration units supplied by Marshall Fleet Solutions for sixteen new trailers, after a two-day fuel trial demonstrated that the SLX used significantly less fuel than its competitor. Eight SLX300s have entered into service on Schmitz Cargobull trailers, with the remainder fitted on Krone trailers to follow shortly. Cold Move has also awarded Marshall Fleet Solutions the maintenance contract for the units.

Thermo King’s SLX range is specifically designed for all-round, whisper-quiet efficiency with reduced exhaust emissions, and CO2 emissions reduced by up to 20% over an average lifespan of 20 years. Its Greentech™ low emission diesel engine runs at slower speeds to extend component life as well as reducing noise and fuel consumption. The refrigeration units were tested on site at Cold Move in Oswestry with trailers supplied by specialist transport company Cadwallader.

James Woodward, Managing Director of Cold Move explained: “Fuel efficiency was our primary concern as part of our company commitment to reduce our carbon footprint; the SLX gave us what we were looking for. Marshall Fleet Solutions’ maintenance contract was not only competitively priced with excellent national coverage, but their maintenance depot is in very close proximity to ours.”

Marshall Fleet Solutions’ Managing Director, Andrew Howells said: “The SLX300 is sold on the basis of its reduced environmental impact, and it was excellent to see this backed up in Cold Move’s fuel trials. Fuel efficiency will of course only be one of many of the benefits of this unit. We look forward to supporting Cold Move in the future.”
